May 2026 Job Market Snapshot for Western Canada

May 2026 was the busiest month yet on JobAds.ca. We tracked 11,115 new postings across Western Canada, and for the first time the snapshot covers all four jurisdictions we now gather data from: Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon (new this month).

Every chart on this page is generated live from our database, filtered to jobs that posted a salary or hourly rate during the month. Listings without compensation info were excluded so you are looking at apples-to-apples wage data only. 8,524 of the 11,115 May postings (about 77 percent) included a wage, up modestly from the equivalent share in April.

In May 2026, JobAds.ca tracked 8,371 job postings with published salary or hourly rate across 3,235 distinct employers and 610 cities and towns in Western Canada. Hourly compensation averaged $29.85 with a median of $26.00, while annual salaries averaged $62,193 (median $54,080).

Hiring was led by Other roles with 1,681 postings. Saskatoon was the busiest market with 936 jobs posted there. Saskatchewan accounted for 4,913 postings (avg $28.78/hr) versus 3,410 in Alberta (avg $31.39/hr).

The single highest-paying listing of the period was a Sleep Medicine Physician role at Sleep and Wake Clinic offering up to $728,000 annually. Read on for the full breakdown by category, location, and wage band.

A few things stood out in the May data:

• Saskatchewan led posting volume. SK accounted for 7,622 postings (69 percent of the regional total), Alberta for 3,456 (31 percent), and Yukon contributed its first 37 May postings as the new data feed came online. Saskatchewan Health Authority alone posted 2,807 jobs, more than any other employer on the platform.
• Healthcare and food service led hiring. Healthcare-Nursing topped the categories list at 1,108 postings, followed by Food Service (995), Management (796), Management and Supervisory (633), Healthcare Support (571), Transportation (381), and Education and Teaching (311).
• The wage distribution stayed broad. Hourly postings split roughly into thirds: about 3,800 jobs sat in the $15 to $25 range, another 1,400 between $25 and $35, and a strong 3,800 between $35 and $50 plus over $50 per hour. The midrange ($25 to $35) reflects the broad skilled-trades and service-sector mix, while the upper band is heavy on healthcare specialists, senior trades, and management.
• Alberta paid a touch more on average. Average hourly across May postings was $33.02 in Alberta versus $30.87 in Saskatchewan, with annualized averages of $68,687 and $64,215 respectively. Yukon postings (all annual-only government roles) averaged $91,543, reflecting the cost-of-living adjustments built into Yukon Government pay grids.
• City share concentrates in the big four. Saskatoon (1,413), Regina (1,314), Edmonton (861), and Calgary (804) absorbed roughly 40 percent of May postings between them. Outside the big four, Prince Albert (365), Yorkton (313), Moose Jaw (274), and North Battleford (245) carried steady weekly volume.
• The highest single posting was a Sleep Medicine Physician in Alberta at $728,000 per year. Cardiologist and rheumatologist roles at $700,000 rounded out the top three. Healthcare physician roles consistently lead the high end of the distribution.
