About Yellowknife

Population: ~20,340 (city, 2021 census)

Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories and the largest community in the territory, with about 20,340 people inside city limits (there is no formally designated Census Metropolitan Area in the NWT). It sits on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, about 400 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle.

The economy is dominated by government. The Government of the Northwest Territories (every GNWT department and the Legislative Assembly) is by far the largest single employer, supported by Government of Canada regional offices and the City of Yellowknife. Diamond mining services are the second major pillar: although the three operating diamond mines (Ekati, Diavik, and Gahcho Kué) are hundreds of kilometres further north, their logistical, administrative, and workforce staging operations run through Yellowknife, with regular charter flights into the mine sites. Construction and skilled trades support ongoing public infrastructure projects, and tourism (northern lights viewing in the long dark winters, summer houseboat and fishing trips) adds a growing seasonal workforce.

Yellowknife is accessible year-round by the Mackenzie Highway (plus Highway 3 across the Deh Cho Bridge) and by regular daily flights to Edmonton and Calgary. Winters are long, dry, and extremely cold with aurora season running roughly late August to mid-April; summers are short, warm, and bright, with 20 or more hours of daylight at the June solstice. The city is a traditional meeting place of Yellowknives Dene First Nation and other Dene and Métis communities.
