About Winnipeg

Population: ~749,500 (city, 2021 census) Metro: ~834,700 (CMA, 2021 census)

Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba and the largest city on the Canadian Prairies, with about 749,500 people inside city limits and 834,700 across the Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area. It sits at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers in southern Manitoba.

The economy is one of the most diversified in Western Canada. Manufacturing is anchored by New Flyer Industries (the largest bus manufacturer in North America), Boeing Canada's Winnipeg composites plant, Winpak, and Palliser Furniture. Financial services are led by Great-West Lifeco (Canada Life), IG Wealth Management, and Wawanesa Insurance. Food processing and agribusiness are centred on Richardson International, Maple Leaf Foods, and the Canadian Grain Commission. Winnipeg is also a major transportation hub (CentrePort Canada inland port, CN Rail Symington Yard, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport). Health care is anchored by the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital; the Royal Canadian Mint strikes circulation coinage for Canada and dozens of other countries from its Winnipeg facility.

Winnipeg is known for The Forks (confluence of the Red and Assiniboine, a national historic site), the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the Winnipeg Jets. Winters are famously cold (Winnipeg routinely records some of the coldest days of any major Canadian city) and summers are hot and humid. The University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, and Red River College Polytechnic together educate roughly 60,000 post-secondary students.
