About this role

This is to fill 1 full time permanent position.

The Environmental Protection & Assessment Branch (EPA) works to protect human health and the environment by establishing and implementing regulations and programs to safeguard and enhance the quality of the territory’s air, land and water. Our Environmental Compliance & Inspection section is seeking an individual to manage a team that verifies compliance of Environment Act and Waters Act through inspections of authorizations, as well as responding to environmental spills and public concerns. The work of this team includes, but is not limited to, conducting compliance inspections; providing advice, guidance and direction to stakeholders; responding to environmental complaints; taking soil, air, and water samples for regulatory purposes; and overseeing Yukon’s 24/7 spill reporting and response program.

The ideal candidate will be an expert in the field of environmental protection and a leader in the promotion of best environmental practices. They will have strong interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills to build and maintain relationships and resolve differences among parties with conflicting and/or strongly-held views and interests. In support of a one-government approach to compliance, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong collaboration and coordination across different branches within government or another institution. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the ability to work in a setting with numerous and changing priorities, and the ability to develop and apply risk-based enforcement and compliance strategies.

Essential Qualifications (what we’re looking for in your application):

Review the essential qualifications below. We will screen your resume based on these qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in science, environmental management, or related discipline;
  • Considerable experience leading and mentoring a team of professionals, preferably in a compliance and enforcement setting;
  • Considerable experience managing financial resources and operations of a program or unit;
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation, preferably the Yukon Environment Act, Waters Act and regulations (or equivalent);
  • Considerable experience conducting inspections, developing inspection and compliance plans and strategies in a regulatory environment;
  • Experience with sampling techniques and best practices for industrial and commercial waste management would be an asset;

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Additional Information

Conditions of Employment

Valid Class 5 Yukon driver’s licence; hazardous materials technician-level certification (or equivalent), or acquire within 12 months of hire.

The incumbent may be exposed to potentially hazardous materials and will be required to travel to Yukon communities and work in the field.

Standard First Aid or ability to acquire within 6 months of hire.
