Welders join, fabricate, and repair metal using arc, MIG, TIG and oxy-fuel techniques. In Saskatchewan, welding is a Red Seal designated trade and the path runs through a 3-year apprenticeship overseen by SATCC.

Combines 1,800 on-the-job hours per year with annual technical training at Sask Polytech. Level 2 technical training is roughly 210 hours; Level 3 is roughly 230 hours. Completing all three levels and passing the Interprovincial exam earns the Red Seal endorsement.
Full-time program at the Regina campus that counts for Level 1 and Level 2 technical training credit (1,200 SATCC-recognised hours) and gives you a head start when you find an apprenticeship employer.
Indigenous-led program covering shielded metal arc, MIG, TIG and oxy-fuel welding plus blueprint reading. Counts as Level 1 apprenticeship technical training.
The equivalent Alberta pathways. If you train in Alberta, your credential is portable to Saskatchewan and most other provinces.
Three 12-month periods, each with at least 1,560 hours on the job plus 8 weeks of classroom instruction. Technical training is delivered by NAIT, SAIT, Keyano, Lakeland, Lethbridge Polytechnic, Medicine Hat, Northern Lakes, Olds, Portage, and Red Deer Polytechnic. Red Seal endorsed.
NAIT and SAIT are the two largest deliverers of Alberta welder apprenticeship classroom training. SAIT also offers a Pre-employment Welding program for entrants without an apprenticeship employer yet.
SATCC (Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission)
Registers your apprenticeship, tracks hours and technical training, and issues the Journeyperson Certificate. After 5,400 hours plus passing the Interprovincial Red Seal exam, you are certified to work as a welder anywhere in Canada.
