Under the direction of the Manager, Correctional Services, you will work as part of a team to carry out the day-to-day operations and programs of the Whitehorse Correctional Centre. This includes maintaining safety, security, and good order, while providing guidance, direction, and support to adult inmates. Through your work, you will model positive, pro-social behaviour and help create an environment that supports accountability, respect, and opportunities for change.

This is a dynamic, shift-based role that requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to respond effectively in a variety of situations. Correctional Officers are designated as Peace Officers under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Upon successful completion of the initial training & assessment, you will be hired as an Auxiliary On-Call Corrections Officer I and eligible for future Permanent Correctional Officer I opportunities.

Rate of pay for training (including shadow shifts) will be $29.57 per hour (IS06) and after successful completion of training it will increase to $37.19 per hour (IS12).

Essential Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Experience applying and enforcing rules and regulations.
• Experience giving direction, coaching, mentoring, and providing feedback to individuals and/or groups.
• Post-secondary coursework and/or training in criminology, justice, corrections, social services, or another related field would be an asset.
• Experience in Security, Law Enforcement, Supervisory or Customer Services roles may be considered as an asset.

Candidates who have education and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

• Experience positively motivating others, including vulnerable populations
• Demonstration of teamwork, problem-solving, and de-escalation through verbal communication
• Ability to model safe, ethical, legal and fair behaviors
• Good judgment and strong work ethic
• Demonstrating personal integrity
• Familiarity with demonstrating client-oriented services
• Ability to manage conflicts

Conditions of Employment

Have and maintain

• Valid security and vulnerable sector clearance
• Successful completion of the Corrections Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT), FITCO, or PARE. We will accept test results obtained within the 1-year period prior to the start date.
• Valid medical clearance (required prior to first day of work)
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (required prior to first day of work)
• Valid First Aid and CPR certification (must be obtained within 6 months of hire)

Job Requirements

• Occasional travel within and outside the Territory
• Heavy lifting
• Wearing a uniform

Hiring Timeline

• Written Assessment: Week of Oct 5 - 9
• Interviews: October 13 - 16
• COPAT: October 22
• Start Date: November 2, 2026
• Six weeks of classroom training - Corrections Officer Basic Training (COBT)
• A minimum of 8 successful shadowing shifts, under the guidance of the Manager of Correctional Services and an assigned experienced Correctional Officer Mentor, which may include day, evening, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts.
