Joining the OHS Policy Team in the Workplace Policy and Legislation Branch is an exciting opportunity to change policy and legislation to improve Alberta’s workplaces and ensure they are safe and healthy for workers and employers. The team collaborates on OHS policy with other provinces and territories, and actively participates on cross jurisdictional committees. Regularly, the team connects with other ministries to ensure legislation meets the needs of their stakeholders and protects workers. There are also regular engagements with external stakeholders to solicit their feedback when updating OHS legislation. The OHS Policy Team provides many possibilities for professional development, career growth and improving legislation that affects everyone working in Alberta. Workplace Policy and Legislation is one branch within the Safe, Fair and Healthy Workplaces division of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration. The Workplace Policy and Legislation branch is a fast-paced and results-oriented environment that strives for excellence when creating and updating OHS policy. The branch is comprised of three teams that focus on OHS, employment standards and workers' compensation, as well as labour relations policy and legislation.

Safe, Fair and Healthy Workplaces division’s OHS program works to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses and fatalities through regulatory compliance action and the provision of information to worksite parties.

Role Responsibilities
The position reports to the Director of OHS Policy. It ensures that OHS policy and legislation is reviewed and updated to meet the needs of stakeholders and to achieve the department's mandate and objectives.
The Manager will work with the Director to lead a team of professionals responsible for the research, analysis, advice and policy alternatives regarding OHS issues. The Manager will work with the Director to develop stakeholder-responsive policy and legislation and help steer proposed legislation through approval processes. The position will help lead stakeholder engagement and/or public consultation. They will liaise with internal and external stakeholders to understand workplace issues or provide OHS expertise. Additionally, they will lead cross-divisional projects related to the interpretation and application of OHS legislation.
The manager will work collaboratively with other managers in the branch and demonstrate effective leadership with a focus on advancing staff engagement and development.
In your role as the Manager, you will have the following responsibilities:
Formulating and implementing effective and stakeholder-responsive policies and legislation pertaining to OHS through appropriate consultation and research.
Leading a team that develops policy proposals for the Ministry in the area of OHS, ensuring that the team is highly functioning, motivated and supported.
Working collaboratively with other managers in the branch, and in other divisions and departments, to develop and implement projects.
Providing accurate, timely and relevant options, intelligence, and technical and background information on key OHS issues.
Using highly effective written and verbal communication skills to synthesize and relay complex information to program and operational clients within the department, other government departments and key stakeholders.

Qualifications
Minimum requirements
University graduation in a field (such as social sciences, public policy, or law) related to the position assignment, supplemented by a minimum of four years of recent, related experience in developing policy or interpreting and applying legislation is required. Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience mentoring and coaching individuals is also required.
This position requires the following
Thorough understanding of OHS legislation.
Strong ability to interpret and apply legislation and provide recommendations on sensitive policy issues.
Knowledge of government decision-making and policy development processes as well as public consultation processes.
Demonstrated leadership experience and excellent change management, coaching and mentorship capability.
Strong research skills and the ability to proactively monitor and conduct strategic analysis, OHS trends and make sense of and communicate large and complex information under tight deadlines.
Exceptional relationship-building and communications skills, including: excellent listening skills, superior writing ability, organizational and presentation skills.
Ability to simultaneously manage a wide variety of projects and processes to achieve the division’s goals and strategies.
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one year of education for one year of experience or vice versa.
Assets
Broad knowledge of OHS to provide relevant strategic advice.
Understanding of workplace trends and issues within an OHS context as well as a broader labour legislation perspective.
Experience effectively leading teams using collaboration, change management and performance management principles.

Notes
There is one temporary position available located in either Edmonton or Calgary. This position is 36.25 hours per week, 8:15 am – 4:30 pm Monday- Friday.
