Library Assistant

This posting is for two 6-month casual positions. Working as needed up to 75 hours bi-weekly.

About the branch

Yukon Public Libraries operates 15 public libraries in communities throughout the Yukon, including the administrative center at the Whitehorse Public Library. Yukon Public Libraries support the growth and development of Yukon people, associations and communities through a public libraries network by providing community education, information, culture and recreation opportunities and resources for life-long learning and an educated, informed and healthy public.

About the job

The Library Assistant (LA) is an integral part of a diverse team of around 25 including: librarians, library technicians, and other library support staff. LAs are responsible for assisting members of the public in using library resources such as the catalogue, library website, and equipment such as the printer and scanner. LAs main priority is providing customer service, circulation, and other support services to Whitehorse Library patrons, and may from time to time provide administrative and other supports to Yukon Public Libraries in general.

Essential Qualifications

• Experience providing client service in a fast-paced customer-focused environment
• Experience assisting members of the public with basic questions, other information and/or technology related needs
• Experience using various computer software (e.g. MS Office, Internet, e-mail)
• Experience working in a library and familiarity with an Integrated Library System (ILS) is considered an asset.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the above qualifications may be equally considered.

• Ability to conduct detail-oriented work and manage conflicting priorities in a busy environment
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Competence in various computer applications (e.g. MS Office, MS Teams, e-readers) and adaptable to ever-changing technologies.
• Ability to provide excellent customer service experience to a wide-ranging public
• Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to troubleshoot a variety of computer software programs
• Ability to perform routine tasks with accuracy in an environment with constant interruptions

Job Requirements

• Hours include various evening and weekend shifts.
• This position involves standing, bending, lifting, and/or reaching.
