About this role
The role is to provides veterinary leadership, supervision and regulatory oversight in support of the Canadian Food Inspection Agencys mandate to protect food safety, animal health and public health. Supervises and directs veterinarians and inspection staff, establishes priorities, coordinates operational activities and promotes consistent application of CFIA programs, policies and procedures.
Provides professional veterinary expertise and advice on animal health, food safety, humane handling, regulatory compliance and veterinary science. Conducts and oversees ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections, export inspections and other regulatory activities, assesses compliance with applicable legislation and regulations, identifies risks and determines appropriate enforcement or corrective actions.
Provides guidance, coaching, training and mentorship to inspection personnel and veterinarians, supporting professional development and consistent decision-making. Builds and maintains effective working relationships with industry, internal and external partners, veterinarians and other government organizations.
Exercises sound professional judgment when managing complex, sensitive or emerging situations and provides recommendations to management. Reviews operational information and records, contributes to planning and continuous improvement, and supports the effective delivery of inspection programs.
The position requires adaptability and the ability to work in a changing operational environment, including different establishments and locations. Duties may involve travel, shift work, weekends, statutory holidays and overtime, as well as working in physically and environmentally challenging conditions while maintaining required safety and biosecurity standards.
