Buffalo Plains Cattle Co. is seeking a full-time, permanent Pen Rider to join our growing team. We are located 11 km west of Bethune, Saskatchewan, 62 km from Regina and 39 km from Moose Jaw. Employee housing is available to rent nearby.
The Pen Rider is responsible for monitoring the health and welfare of feedlot cattle, identifying sick or injured animals, administering treatments, and maintaining accurate computerized treatment records.
Key Responsibilities
- Ride pens daily on horseback in all weather conditions to monitor cattle health.
- Identify, pull, diagnose and treat sick or injured cattle.
- Record treatments using our computerized treatment system.
- Move and sort cattle for treatment and shipping, including accurate head counts.
- Inspect pens, water bowls and bunks and report maintenance concerns.
- Assist with induction of incoming cattle.
- Operate tractors, skid steers and other equipment as required.
- Assist with general feedlot duties and maintenance.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of livestock/herd health experience preferred.
- Experience identifying and treating sick or injured cattle.
- Strong cattle handling and horse husbandry skills.
- Valid driver's licence and fluent English.
- Reliable, self-motivated team player with strong attention to detail and communication skills.
- Equipment operating experience is an asset.
Applicants with their own horse(s) and tack are preferred, but this is not required. Buffalo Plains provides horse hay, a bi-weekly horse allowance and an additional farrier allowance.
This is a physically demanding outdoor position involving horseback and on-foot cattle handling, repetitive tasks, and lifting up to 60 lbs.
Pay: $25.00$32.00/hour, based on experience
Hours: Approximately 4560 hours per week
