Associate Scientist or Scientist (Mid-IR Beamline)

Responsibilities

• Provide user support to general users, beamteam members, fee-for-service clients, and CLS staff.
• Beamline and endstation setup.
• Assists with sample preparation and trains users on how to operate beamline.
• User support beyond normal working hours in accordance with established CLS procedures.
• Measurements and data analysis.
• Supervise and support users to ensure that they are able to perform their scientific experiments in an effective and safe manner.
• Analyse and solve beamline or technical problems and develop recommendations to solve difficult, complex or unusual problems.
• Aid the Beamline Responsible in beamline upgrade/maintenance projects.
• Develop technical expertise in specific areas of beamline operation and instrumentation including software.
• Prepare beamline documentation and operational manuals.
• Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.

Qualifications

• For the Associate Scientist level, a relevant undergraduate or Masters degree is required. For the Scientist level, a relevant Masters degree or Ph.D. in the physical sciences or engineering is required.
• A minimum of two years of directly related experience with a Masters degree, or a minimum of one year of related experience with a Ph.D. degree.
• Experience with Infrared spectroscopic techniques is required.
• Experience using microscopes, laser-based systems, advanced instrument development, and optics would be strong assets.
• Basic programming skills in Python is an asset.
• Candidates should demonstrate a clear aptitude for research, particularly in scientific programs requiring collaboration.
