Job Information
The Lead Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving safe, nutritious, and well-balanced meals for residents of the Long-Term Care Facility. Reports to and works closely with the Long Term Care Facility Coordinator and supported by an Assistant Cook, the Lead Cook ensures dietary needs, food safety standards, and quality meal service are consistently met.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES
Plan and prepare daily meals, snacks, and therapeutic diets.
Develop menus in collaboration with the LTC Facility Coordinator and Clinical Care Coordinator.
Ensure food safety, sanitation, and infection prevention standards are maintained.
Order food, manage inventory, and minimize waste.
Supervise and provide guidance to the Cook Assistant and new kitchen staff.
Prepare meals for residents, Home Care clients, and special events, including traditional foods when available.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a recognized commercial cooking program.
At least one (1) year of experience preparing meals in an institutional, commercial, or healthcare setting.
Experience working with older adults or in a long-term care environment is an asset.
Experience as a Resident Care Aide or in a healthcare setting is an asset.
Current CPR and Basic First Aid certification.
Current Food Safety/Food Handler Certification.
A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required and must be maintained.
Equivalencies may include
Equivalent combinations of education, training, certification, and directly related experience will be considered. Examples include:
Journeyperson or Red Seal Cook certification with relevant institutional or commercial cooking experience.
Completion of a culinary or hospitality program combined with related institutional, healthcare, or commercial kitchen experience.
Several years of directly related experience preparing meals in a healthcare, long-term care, school, camp, or other institutional setting.
Equivalent qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a commercial kitchen within a long-term care environment.
Requires standing for extended periods, lifting and moving food supplies, and operating commercial kitchen equipment.
Regular exposure to hot surfaces, sharp utensils, and cleaning chemicals.
Must maintain high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and confidentiality.
May be required to work weekends, holidays, and flexible shifts to support a seven-day operation.

The salary range for this position is from $37.90 per hour to $45.27 per hour (approximately $78,832 - $94,162) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $5,536.
