The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, policing and police oversight and public safety. The Ministry supports crime prevention and restorative justice programs, as well as programs and services to support victims of crime, including those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking. The Ministry also coordinates large scale emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and initiatives.

Role Responsibilities

Are you looking for a career where you can help ensure Albertans have safe and secure communities? Then look no further! The Calgary Remand Centre is searching for motivated individuals and positive role models with cultural and community awareness for an Operational Services Position.

Reporting to the Loading Dock Supervisor, you will be responsible for secure handling of offender property, goods and money, and the purchase of transport tickets, you will also be responsible for timely distribution of inmate clothing to inmates or units. You will interact with inmates, and correctional officers in the performance of your duties.

Additionally, you may be responsible for operating a 5-ton truck, working in a loading dock/shipping environment, and assisting with fleet management, which includes facilitating general maintenance, tire changes, and detailing with local automotive shops. Some general mechanics experience is considered an asset, but not necessary.

Qualifications

Some high school education and one year of related experience (stock keeping, working in a warehouse environment) .

Equivalency: One year of directly related experience for one year of directly related education, or one year of directly related education for one year of directly related experience.

The following will be considered as assets

Customer service experience in an environment handling cash or personal property such as a bank, registry, or courthouse.

Previous Supervisory experience is considered an asset.

Working knowledge and working experience in Microsoft based applications.

Some general mechanics experience.

Requirement

Direct contact with offenders and heavy lifting is required, must be able to lift up to 50lbs.

Notes

This competition will be used to fill one permanent and multiple wage positions at the Calgary Remand Centre.

Hours of work

1. 25 hours per week. This role requires working both day and night shifts, including weekends.

The Calgary Remand Centre is located at 12200 85 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T3R 1J3. The Centre operates 24/7.

Public transportation to the Centre is limited and the successful candidate is required to have access to reliable transportation. Free parking is available.

Wage positions are offered on a casual/on-call basis, hours of work are not guaranteed and will be determined by the Supervisor. Successful candidates may at times receive shifts on short notice. A successful candidate could be working full-time hours or have no shifts depending on the week. Shifts vary based on the Centre’s needs.

In addition to regular wages, wage employees receive 11.6% in lieu of benefits and vacation leave:

1. 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays.

6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.

You will be eligible for a Correctional Institutional Salary Allowance for each day worked.

Final candidates for this position will be required to provide a Fingerprint Based Criminal Record Check. Any associated costs will be your responsibility, and you are only required to provide this check if requested. We cannot accept on-line Criminal Record Checks, from a non-Policing Agency.
