Role Responsibilities

The Data Entry Technician is a seasonal, wage opportunity providing support to the data management component of Alberta’s Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance program.

The major responsibilities for the successful candidates will include

:

Organizing, verifying, and entering individual CWD sample data into the online internal tracking programs of Alberta’s Recreational Licencing Management (ReLM),

Coordinating and verifying incoming data labels, solving associated data and information problems, and coordinating with data staff in Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation.

Contacting individual hunters by phone will be necessary

Additional duties may include backup support for receiving and storing biological samples and assisting with ongoing wildlife lab activities in conjunction with other staff in the Wildlife Disease Unit.

Data Entry Technicians work individually and in a team environment. These positions are located at the O.S. Longman Building of the Wildlife Health Branch of Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Edmonton.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Some high school education and a minimum of 12 months of experience in biology, data management, or accounting.

Proficiency in computer skills, including keyboarding, data entry and management, and strong organizational abilities.

Preference will be given to candidates with at least 12 months of experience working with wildlife biology data, including determining, validating, and managing geographic coordinate data (e.g., UTM, latitude/longitude) across multiple coordinate systems.

Assets

Ability to read maps and determine geographical coordinate data with multiple coordinate systems (e.g., ATS, UTM, decimal degrees)

Proficiency in with computers and databases to organize and manage data in online tracking programs

Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy and organizational skills when managing large volumes of data

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and investigate data-related issues and provide recommendations for resolution

Directly related biological laboratory experience via technical college or university.

This competition is recruiting for a Data Entry Technician with weekly work hours up to 36.25, Monday to Friday.

The Data Entry Technicians are based in Edmonton, working closely with Alberta Agriculture laboratory staff and overseen by the Wildlife Disease Specialist of Fish and Wildlife Stewardship. This position requires you to be physically present at the worksite located at the OS Longman Laboratory Building, 6909 116 St NW, Edmonton, AB T6H 4P2.

This position has an estimated employment term of October 26th, 2026, to March 31, 2027. A telephone interview may be part of the assessment process.
