Heavy Equipment Operator - Tailings (Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada)

LOCATION: Fort McMurray, Alberta (CA-AB)

Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, Tailings, you will be responsible for the safe operation of tailings heavy equipment such as, D8 cell dozer, excavator, and 988 loader. Keeping in line with our strong commitment to safety, you will ensure that safety policies and procedures are being followed by all personnel, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensuring Safety Above All Else.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Adhere to safety and environmental requirements
  • Operate tailings heavy equipment (D8 cell dozer, loader, excavator, grader, wiggle wagon)
  • Safely and efficiently perform cell construction in summer and winter months
  • Maintain dykes within an active cell, remove and install nipple pipe, track pack, monitor spill box
  • Prepare tailings pedestal for future cell construction (dry dyke, build ramps, read and interpret survey stakes)
  • Complete equipment inspection logbooks and checks, and communicate significant changes to the Tailings Supervisor
  • Perform tailings line switches and maintain clear communication with the Control Room Specialist
  • Perform equipment isolation for maintenance activities
  • Provide direction to maintenance and contract personnel performing maintenance and other operational duties during the assigned shift
  • Maintain housekeeping in the assigned area at a high level
  • Ensure that shift change is well communicated

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Three or more years of experience as a tailings cell dozer operator
  • Additional two or more years of experience in an oil sands mine is preferred
  • Experience operating mechanical equipment such as pumps, light plants and hydraulic power units would be an asset
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Strong proven safety and environmental mindset
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Ability to work in a team environment and make timely decisions associated with process upsets
  • Strong troubleshooting skills would be an asset
  • Ability to adhere to procedures - you do not take or tolerate shortcuts and if the procedure is incorrect, you fix it

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive
  • This is a camp-based position at the Fort Hills site
  • The shift schedule will be a rotation of seven days on, seven days off alternating day and night shifts
  • You will be working outside in a challenging environment
  • Physical requirements: ability to lift up to 50 lbs
